This 16"x20" black & white original oil painting was just completed. I enjoyed capturing the 'battle in the ditch', between two large swells. A school of Dorado in open water is no match for a baitball. But, a Sailfish in a rough white capped swell can put the bill to a schooling Dorado. Also know as Mahi-Mahi, the smaller, schooling dorado are no match for any of the larger more powerful billfish species. Sailfish and dorado are vibrant, ever chancing colorful species, so I challenged myself to capture this scene in black and white. By eliminating the color, I was able to stress the power of the swell, the fierce overcast sky, and the fury of the feeding frenzy. Dominated by shading and format, this piece blurs the line between water & sky, and between predator & prey.
